The Well-Designed Home: How Interior Design Influences Our Well-Being

We often think about interior design in terms of architecture and aesthetics, but the impact of our surroundings extends far beyond what we see. A well-designed home not only looks beautiful, but also influences how we feel, function, rest, and experience our everyday lives. The right lighting can help establish a sense of calm, natural materials can create a connection to the outdoors, colors and textures can influence our moods, and a thoughtfully planned layout can make daily life feel a little more effortless.

At Tammara Stroud Design, we believe a well-designed home should offer more than just visual appeal; it should support the people who live in it. When designing a space, we consider not only how it will look, but also how it will feel to experience it. How can we create an environment that offers physical comfort, emotional fulfillment, and a greater sense of well-being?

The Sensory Experience: Color, Lighting & Physical Comfort

Color & Mood

Color is one of the most immediate ways a space can communicate a feeling. For instance, deeper, more saturated tones can create a sense of intimacy and coziness, while softer blues and greens are often associated with calm and relaxation.

At Tammara Stroud Design, we consider several factors when selecting paint colors, including value (how light or dark a color appears on a scale from white to black), saturation (the intensity of the color), how natural light will influence its appearance, and the personal associations we may have with certain colors. Selecting the right color palette is essential to establishing the intended atmosphere and mood of each room.

Lighting & Our Natural Rhythms

Lighting affects much more than how we see a space. Our exposure to light throughout the day helps regulate our circadian rhythms, which influence our sleep and energy levels. Thoughtful lighting design considers:

  • Maximizing natural daylight wherever possible.

  • Layering ambient, task, and accent lighting to add depth while providing the right illumination for different activities.

  • Incorporating warmer, softer lighting in the evening to create a calming atmosphere and support our natural sleep-wake cycles.

Physical Comfort

Comfort is foundational to well-being. Furniture proportions, supportive seating, soft textiles and rugs, and acoustics all contribute to how comfortable we feel in our homes.

At Tammara Stroud Design, we believe furniture should be as comfortable as it is beautiful. We've personally tested many of the furnishings we specify for our clients, with several of these pieces in our own homes. When clients visit our studio, we often encourage them to try the furniture on our showroom floor, allowing them to experience details like seat depth, cushion firmness, and overall comfort.

The Living Room at Belgrove 1939 brings together energizing and calming colors, layered lighting, and furnishings that are as beautiful as they are comfortable.

A Sense of Calm: Flow, Functionality & Psychological Comfort

Our homes are meant to be places where we can recharge. When a space feels disorganized, difficult to navigate, or doesn't support our daily routines, it can become another source of stress. A well-designed home, should work quietly in the background. When everything has a purpose and the space supports your routines, you spend less time managing your environment and more time enjoying it. At Tammara Stroud Design, we consider how our clients move through and interact with their homes, looking for opportunities to make everyday living feel more intuitive and effortless.

  • Intuitive flow: Thoughtful space planning creates clear pathways and logical transitions between rooms, making everyday navigation feel natural. Functional layouts are designed around the way people actually live and move through their homes.

  • Functionality & Purposeful Storage: We love incorporating thoughtful, often customizable storage solutions that give everyday belongings a designated place. Well-integrated storage helps minimize visual clutter and creates a more organized, calming environment.

  • A sense of retreat: Our homes should offer spaces where we can step away from the demands of daily life. Comfortable furnishings, thoughtful layouts, and a sense of privacy can help create places to unwind, recharge, and enjoy a moment of quiet.

The living room at Greenlake Colonial 1907 features custom cabinetry designed around our clients' storage needs. The layout was thoughtfully planned to accommodate the natural flow between the kitchen, breakfast nook, and living room. With its warm aesthetic and cozy furnishings, the space also offers a quiet retreat from the demands of everyday life.

Our Connection to Nature: Biophilic Design

Humans have an innate connection to the natural world, and bringing elements of nature indoors can help create environments that feel restorative and calming. This is something we especially love to consider in our designs as many of our projects are situated in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Our region's natural surroundings provide endless inspiration for the materials, colors, textures, and views we incorporate into our designs. This approach is known as biophilic design. It goes beyond simply adding houseplants; it considers how we can bring elements of the natural world into our everyday environments. This can include:

  • Natural Materials: Incorporating wood, stone, linen, wool, and other organic materials.

  • Connection to the Outdoors: Maximizing natural light and taking advantage of views of greenery and surrounding landscapes.

  • Organic Forms & Textures: Using natural shapes, patterns, and textures inspired by the environment.

At Tammara Stroud Design, we consider how material selections, natural textures, architecture, and connections to the outdoors can help create a sense of tranquility. By thoughtfully incorporating these elements, we can create interiors that feel connected to and feature their surroundings.

The primary bathroom at Country Club Road 2023 was inspired by its natural surroundings. Thoughtfully placed windows maximize views and natural light, creating a sense of connection to the outdoors even while inside. Earthy colors and organic textures enhance the indoor-outdoor feel of the space.

Emotional Fulfillment: That Feeling of “Home, Sweet Home”

The most meaningful benefit of a well-designed home is that it creates a space that feels personal. Our homes hold memories, reflect our interests, and provide the backdrop for our everyday lives. Artwork, collected objects, meaningful furnishings, favorite colors, and personal details all contribute to a sense of identity and belonging.

A home should not only look beautiful; it should also feel welcoming when you walk through the door, support your daily routines, provide comfort at the end of a long day, and make room for the moments that matter most. Ultimately, thoughtful design creates more than beautiful spaces; it creates environments that enrich our well-being.
